MMCDA SUPPLEMENTARY SPECIFICATION
As of January 2006, the Master Municipal Construction Documents Association (MMCDA)
approved a supplementary to the MMCD Volume II (2000 Edition) for:
- Roadway embankment fill (subgrade fill) – Section 02224, Clause 2.2.1.4
- Granular material – Section 02226, Clause 2.5.1
- Pipe bedding and surround material – Section 02226, Clause 2.7.2
- Road subbase – Section 02234, Clause 2.1.1.7
The supplementary provides standard contract language for including river
sand in construction tenders as approved by the project's Contract
Administrator.
River sand has many advantages compared with other types of granular construction material. Not only is it plentiful and renewable but it
is also clean, workable, resellable, and reusable. Its physical properties are
summarized as:

The Fraser River Port Authority removes roughly two million cubic metres of sand from the shipping
channel each year – enough to fill Vancouver’s GM Place Stadium. Sand sales
help the Port Authority offset a small portion of the multi-million dollar cost
of dredging – which protects jobs in the region by ensuring shipping will
continue and also helps mitigate the threat of flooding in the Lower Mainland.
