September 19, 2005: The Fraser River Port Authority has donated $3,000 to the Fraser Alumni Association in support of marine education programs. The Alumni members are integral supporters of the J.F. Williams Navy League Cadet Corps and the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Fraser of New Westminster, programs which provide youth with opportunities to learn about sailing, leadership and maritime traditions.
“We rely on contributions from the community to assist us in funding the Cadet programs,” said Baj Puri, Chair of the Fraser Alumni Association. “Our members work very hard throughout the year to support the cadets and we couldn’t do it without the generosity of sponsors like the Fraser River Port Authority.”
“We are really happy to be able to support local education programs,” said Megan Park, Public Affairs Coordinator for the Fraser River Port Authority, who presented a cheque to the Alumni. “We recognize and appreciate the benefits that Cadet programs provide for today’s youth.”
Monies were raised during the popular Port Authority-sponsored harbour tours held each summer. Harbour tour proceeds have also been donated recently to the Samson V Maritime Museum to help fund a new exhibit and to the Fraser River Discovery Centre in support of a new education program “Commerce of the Fraser”. Over the past six years, the tours have raised over $28,000 in support of local marine-related education programs.
