August 14, 2006: The Fraser River Port Authority is thrilled to announce its sponsorship of the 2006 Richmond Maritime Festival. The Britannia Heritage Shipyard, National Historic Site in Steveston hosts the festival, August 18-20, 2006.
“Richmond has such a rich maritime heritage and continues to be a thriving harbour – what better way to celebrate that wealth with the community then by hosting the maritime festival,” said Megan Park, Public Affairs Coordinator for the Fraser River Port Authority. “We’re happy to partner with the City to make this event possible.”
The Festival will offer activities for the whole family including boat viewing on land and water, maritime entertainment, a salmon barbeque, harbour tours, exhibits and hands-on demonstrations, crafts for kids, and more. A highlight of the festival will be the visiting tall ship, Concordia, a 188-foot barkentine. The Fraser River Port Authority will be on hand with activities and displays featuring the ships of the Fraser River. Kids are invited to drop by the tent and take the Captain’s Challenge, a fun way to explore the festival and win prizes.
“We’re really pleased that the Fraser River Port Authority is sponsoring the Richmond Maritime Festival this year,” said Angela Soon, Community Facilities Coordinator for the City of Richmond. “Their support means we are able to provide a free, fun activity for all.”
The Fraser River Port Authority believes that, when it comes to BC’s might Fraser River, there are lots of things to celebrate. These include the river’s service as a major transportation corridor for commerce and its role as Canada’s largest fresh water port generating over 16,100 local jobs. Festivals like the Richmond Maritime Festival are a perfect opportunity to learn more about the ships and industry of the working river.
