Fraser River Port Welcomes First Mitsubishi Vehicles

August 5, 2002: The first delivery of Mitsubishi cars destined for sale in Canada was celebrated at a ceremony held at Fraser Wharves, one of two automobile terminals located within the jurisdiction of the Fraser River Port Authority. Following the ceremony, 840 Lancers and Montero Sport vehicles picked up in Mizushima, Japan were unloaded from the vessel the “Camellia Ace”. The vehicles will be distributed through Fraser Wharves to Mitsubishi’s new dealerships across Canada.

“We’re pleased to see Mitsubishi Motors expanding into the Canadian market and doing so through a Canadian Port,” said the Fraser River Port Authority’s Ed Kargl, Vice President of Business Development. “Clearly they’re taking advantage of the efficiencies offered by Fraser Wharves and Fraser River Port, which specializes in the handling of vehicles.”

More than 369,000 vehicles were imported through Fraser River Port in 2001, making it Canada’s largest auto import centre. The Port’s other niche cargoes include forest products, containers, and steel. In 2001, a total of 22 million tonnes of cargo moved through Fraser River Port, which generates more than 10,700 direct local jobs.
