| Fraser River Port Greets Forest Products Carrier |
|
July 31, 2002: Fraser River Port celebrated the maiden voyage of the new forest products carrier, Cielo di Vancouver, at Fraser Surrey Docks on July 26, 2002.
The Cielo di Vancouver is one of MedBulks two new vessels offering monthly bulk and breakbulk services from Fraser River Port to ports in the Mediterranean. MedBulk has provided regular service from Fraser Surrey Docks since 1993 and is part of the dAmico Group of companies.
We are pleased to welcome the Cielo di Vancouver to Fraser River Port, said Ed Kargl, Vice President of Business Development for the Fraser River Port Authority. Forest products are our largest single export and to see new vessels in this trade when the forestry sector is facing difficult times shows the dedication of MedBulk to this important industry.
With a carrying capacity of 37,420 tonnes and state of the art technology, the Chinese-built carrier is specially designed for the efficient transportation of forest products. The vessels sister ship, Cielo di Monfalcone is also expected to make its maiden voyage to Fraser River Port before the end of this year.
Over 22 million tonnes of cargo are shipped through Fraser River Port terminals annually, generating 10,700 direct jobs. The port specializes in four niche cargoes: forest products, steel, containers, and automobiles.
