FraserFest continues positive impact

July 25, 2005: The Fraser River Port Authority would like to thank everyone who came out to the various events at FraserFest and contributed to its success.

Sponsorships and contest winners

The Fraser River Port Authority was pleased to sponsor many activities at FraserFest, held July 15-17, including: boat building, harbour tours, fishy crafts, contests and a fun scavenger hunt.  Over 1100 wooden toy boats were crafted and decorated with help from Vancouver Maritime Museum volunteers, while harbour tours aboard the paddlewheeler M.V. NATIVE raised over $4,500 for marine-related education programs in the community.  Carlos Castenlanos of Surrey and Earl Christensen of New Westminster were the lucky winners of the Port Authority’s contest draws.

Ship models to remain on display

In addition, a special exhibit of model ships, entitled “Commerce of the Fraser”, will remain on display at the Fraser River Discovery Centre until the end of September 2005, the Fraser River Port Authority has announced.

“This is an excellent display for everyone”, said Fran McDougall, Executive Director of the Fraser River Discovery Centre.  “We are very pleased to be partnering once again with the Fraser River Port Authority and to enhance our ‘Commerce of the Fraser’ education program.”

The display of model ships, on loan from the Vancouver Maritime Museum, is being sponsored by the Port Authority and was initially set up for New Westminster’s recent FraserFest where it proved to be a popular draw with festival attendees from across the Lower Mainland.

Fraser River photo contest

With the arrival of the summer sunshine at FraserFest, it is a great time for taking photographs.  The Fraser River Port Authority encourages everyone to photograph the many ways to live/work/play on the Fraser River.  Deadline for the Port Authority-sponsored “Portraits of the Fraser” photo contest is September 1, 2005.  Photographs will be on display at the Fraser River Discovery Centre during River’s Day, September 25, 2005.
