Ships AHOY!

July 5, 1999 : The Fraser River Port Authority is pleased to announce their sponsorship of FraserFest’99. Now in its 10th year, the festival is a celebration of the Fraser River and its role in the many communities bordering its shores. This year, it’s happening on Saturday, July 17 and Sunday, July 18, at Westminster Quay in New Westminster.

Fraser River Port’s incredibly popular boat-building kits, always a festival highlight for the kids, will be offered on Saturday and Sunday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Everything they need to build the boats will be available at Fraser River Port’s tent on the boardwalk at the western end of the festival site. This fun event is co-sponsored by Fraser River Port and the Vancouver Maritime Museum.

Have you always wanted to know more about activities on the river? A visit to Fraser River Port’s tent will provide you with answers! Displays include profiles of the Port’s two major shipping terminals, Fraser Surrey Docks and Annacis Auto Terminals. The Vancouver Maritime Museum will also display models of ships that have travelled the river over the past one hundred years, which is an annual festival favourite.

Each year, FraserFest’99 is attended by thousands of people from across the province and Lower Mainland. Yet it is just one of the many summer festivals held along the Fraser River. A listing of events across the province is provided in Fun on the Fraser, a booklet sponsored by Fraser River Port among others. It is available from visitor information centres.

Fraser River Port believes that the river is a good cause for celebration. According to the Fraser River Port Economic Impact Study 1998, $9.2 billion worth of goods pass through the Port each year. Shipping and trade-related activities contribute more than $1.4 billion towards Canada’s GDP. These activities also create a total of 24,000 jobs across the country, more than 6,000 of them right here in the Lower Mainland.
