Kids shipyard returns to FraserFest 2004

July 7, 2004: The sound of happy children putting their imaginations to work will fill the air when the Fraser River Port Authority once again sponsors boat building at this year’s FraserFest.

This will be the tenth year for model boat building workshops at FraserFest. The popular activity, held between 11 am and 3 pm on Saturday, July 17 and Sunday, July 18, is an ideal opportunity for parents and children to work together and build and decorate their own small wooden boat.

Every child will receive a free boat kit containing a rough wooden hull, a wheelhouse, mast, and other parts and tools for assembly.  Volunteers from the Vancouver Maritime Museum will be on hand to offer assistance to the kids.

“The Port Authority is sponsoring 1,500 boat building kits for FraserFest 2004,” said Megan Park, Community Relations Coordinator for the Fraser River Port Authority. “That translates into 1,500 opportunities for families to share time, have fun, and learn together.  It’s another way that Fraser River Port puts the fun into one of the Lower Mainland’s most popular family festivals.”

Children and adults alike will be able to gather inspiration for their building efforts by checking out the Port Authority’s adjacent display, which highlights different kinds of ships that ply the Fraser River, carrying cargoes from around the world to what is Canada’s second largest port.
