June 25, 2003: The Fraser River Port Authority is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Jack Matthews to the Board of Directors on the recommendation of Transport Minister David Collenette. Mr. Matthews was nominated by user groups, and will serve a three-year term effective June 13, 2003.
The Port Authority’s Board comprises four Directors nominated by user groups and approved by the Minister of Transport, one federal appointee, one provincial appointee and one appointee chosen by the nine municipalities that border the Port Authority’s jurisdiction.
Mr. Matthews has extensive experience in the design and implementation of transportation systems for pulp, paper, and other forest products. He worked for almost ten years with Eurocan Pulp and Paper Co. Ltd. in Kitimat, BC, and for more than two decades with the former Canadian Forest Products Ltd. in Port Mellon, BC, now called Howe Sound Pulp and Paper Limited Partnership. Mr. Matthews retired in 1999 to pursue a career in consulting.
The Port Authority also announces the election of Mr. Kim Husband to Vice Chair of the Board. He succeeds Mel Nunweiler, who completed his three-year term with the Board on June 12, 2003. Mr. Husband was a Provincial Court Judge from 1978 to July 2001. Prior to his appointment to the bench, he practiced law in New Westminster, specializing in litigation and company law. He has been a Board member since 2001.
The Fraser River Port Authority has a mandate to promote waterborne commerce and trade within Fraser River Port, which extends along the main arm of the lower Fraser River, from the mouth at Sand Heads to Kanaka Creek and Pitt Lake. More than 23 million tonnes of cargo move through the Port’s terminals each year, creating more than 10,700 local jobs.
