Fraser River Port Delivers Fun At FraserFest 2002

The Ships of Fraser River Port usually deliver cargo such as cars, containers, steel, and forest products but on July 20 and 21, 2002 they’ll be delivering fun to thousands of Lower Mainland families at FraserFest 2002. FraserFest is a celebration of the Fraser River held each year at New Westminster Quay.

Board the paddlewheeler MV Native for a fascinating tour of the harbour and a close look at some of Fraser River Port’s working ships. Hourly sailings take place between 10am and 4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets ($5/adults, $2.50/children) can be purchased at the Fraser River Discovery Centre on the day of the sailing. Proceeds of the tours, which are sponsored by the Fraser River Port Authority, will go to the Centre.

Children can enjoy model boat building at Fraser River Port’s tent at the west end of the boardwalk between 11am and 3pm on Saturday and Sunday. This is one of the festival’s most popular events, with thousands of aspiring shipbuilders showing up each year to build wooden boats from free kits and get their captain’s papers.

And for those who enjoy browsing, visit the Port Authority’s tent between 10am and 4pm for informative displays about the port, its vessels, and their cargoes. Pick up some colourful Ships of Fraser River Port bookmarks and learn a little bit more about one of Canada’s largest ports.

Over 22 million tones of cargo are shipped through Fraser River Port terminals annually, generating 10,700 direct jobs.
