Fraser Surrey Docks Greets M.V. TIMARU STAR on Maiden Voyage

June 14, 2004 – A new bulk carrier, M.V. Timaru Star, made Fraser River Port its first port of call to pick up cargo while on its maiden voyage from Hong Kong. The ship was officially welcomed to Fraser Surrey Docks during a ceremony held aboard the ship on June 9, 2004.

Fraser Surrey Docks’ Mike McLeod, and Raija Orava, of the Fraser River Port Authority, presented plaques to the vessel’s master, Captain Shang Jing Nong.

Captain U. Sengupta, Fleet Training Superintendent for Indochina Ship Management (HK) Ltd. – which is under contract to crew the vessel – was also on hand for the ceremony. The company mans over 40 ships worldwide.

M.V. Timaru Star was launched in May 2004; she is a Handy-class vessel measuring over 175 meters in length, with a Gross Registered Tonnage of 19,779 metric tonnes and a crew complement of 22. After loading its cargo at Fraser Surrey Docks, Timaru Star will stop in Olympia, Washington, before returning to Japan.

Fraser Surrey Docks, located at the Fraser River Port, is a general cargo terminal on the Fraser River. Fraser River Port is Canada’s second-largest port, located in the main arm of the Fraser River. The Port directly employs over 12,400 people. Total Gross Domestic Product exceeds $2.3 billion.
