June 1, 2006: The Fraser River Port Authority has contributed $10,000 to the Surrey Children’s Festival. This is the second year for the Festival, which has an ambitious three-day program featuring world-class artists in theatre, music, and dance. The festivities will be held June 1-3, 2006 at the Surrey Arts Centre and Bear Creek Park in Surrey.
“We’re really happy to support the Children’s Festival,” said Captain Allen Domaas, President and CEO of the Fraser River Port Authority. “The development of arts and cultural activities in our community continues to enrich our lives. It is wonderful to be able to support an event that will benefit the whole community.”
The Port Authority is sponsoring Clay Arts, a free activity in which participants can help shape a huge clay mural of the Fraser River. Festival artists will create a 3-dimensional map of the river and participants can build components out of clay, such as tugboats, ships, and fish, to create a sculpture of the river. Materials used in the activity will be donated to local area schools after the Festival concludes.
“We are very pleased that the Fraser River Port Authority has chosen to become a founding partner of the first annual Surrey Children’s Festival,” said Todd Ayotte, Manager of Community Development Services for the City of Surrey. “Their contribution will serve to increase the scope, variety and quality of activities, and ensure that the Festival is accessible to all.”
