Fraser River Port Authority Elects Key Board Positions

May 1, 2003: At a regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the Fraser River Port Authority held last month, Mr. Michael J. Jones was re-elected Chair and Mr. Mel Nunweiler was elected Vice Chair.

Mr. Jones, a retired professional engineer, was a partner and Executive Vice President of Aplin & Martin Consultants Ltd., as well as the City of Surrey’s Chief Engineer and City Manager. He has been part of the Board since 1991.

Mr. Nunweiler, a former transportation executive, has particular expertise in the movement of forest products. Over the past 30 years, he held various positions at Canadian Forest Products Ltd. Mr. Nunweiler has been a Board Member since 2000.

Mr. Jones and Mr. Nunweiler commence their respective duties as Chair and Vice Chair effective May 1. Rounding out the Fraser River Port Authority’s board are current elected members, Mr. Malkiat Dhami, Mr. Kim Husband, Mr. Fred Mah, Ms. Helen Sparkes, and Ms. Juliana Yung.

The Fraser River Port Authority has a mandate to facilitate and support trade and port-related activities on the main arm of the Fraser River. Over 23 million tonnes of cargo are shipped through Fraser Port annually, creating over 10,000 local jobs.
