February 16, 2006: Fraser River Port has posted a fourth record year for cargo throughput, with totals reaching 38,818,547 tonnes in 2005 compared to 36,562,166 in 2004.
The total includes 5,603,190 tonnes of international shipments, and a seven per cent increase in domestic shipping to 33,215,357 tonnes.
Auto shipments through the port’s two major vehicle terminals also set a new record, climbing to 452,618 units, up from 437,190 units in 2004.
Container traffic showed significant growth, up 17% to 372,844 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) from 317,582 TEUs in 2004.
Port officials, however, caution the port may experience a reduction in containerized cargo volumes through 2006, following recent consolidations and reallocations of container traffic in the Northwest.
Fraser River Port is Canada’s largest fresh water port and is one of North America’s largest automobile ports, encompassing 270 kilometres of shoreline along the Fraser River from Langley to the Strait of Georgia. It contributes $2.3 billion to Canada’s Gross Domestic Product and provides over 12,400 direct jobs.
The Fraser River Port Authority has a mandate to facilitate and support marine trade and port-related activities on the main arm of the Fraser River.
