FRASER RIVER PORT ESTABLISHES ITS OWN MILLENNIUM MARKER

January 12, 2000 : The Fraser River Port Authority is marking the advent of a new millennium with the creation of a $250,000 Millennium Fund, which will used to enhance the close relationship between the Fraser River and those who live and work along its shores.

The Fraser River Port Millennium Fund will support marine-related projects that have a long-term benefit on the marine transportation sector and the communities that lie within the Port Authority’s jurisdiction. As announced previously, the Fund will be disbursed as grants over the next three to five years. To qualify, projects must harmonize with the environmental, social, and economic objectives of the Port Authority. Projects may be either time-specific programs or capital projects.

Applications must be made by or before March 31, 2000. Eligible applicants include registered charities and qualified donees as defined under the Income Tax Act. Grants will not be made to individuals or businesses. Application forms and detailed eligibility guidelines are available from the Millennium Fund Secretary at the Port Authority’s office in New Westminster.

The Fraser River Port Millennium Fund’s awards advisory committee, selected by the Port Authority’s Board of Directors, will make all final decisions regarding successful applications. Their decisions will not be announced prior to the final application date.

The Millennium Fund is just one of the ways in which the Fraser River Port Authority, a federally mandated agency, is working to support the goals of the communities in which it operates. Approximately $9.2 billion worth of goods pass through the port annually, creating more than 6,000 local jobs. Shipping and trade-related activities contribute more than $1.4 billion towards Canada’s GDP each year.
