Environment

· Estuary Management
· FREMP
· Federal and Provincial Environment Regulations
· Habitat Classification Area Designation System
· "No Net Loss/Net Gain of Habitat" Policy

The Port Authority believes that sustainable economic development is possible through effective management that balances economic growth with environmental stewardship.

A variety of Port Authority programs assess and manage the risks of industrial and commercial development to the local environment. The Port Authority is also a strong proponent of joint estuary management efforts, as both a key player in the Fraser River Estuary Management Program (FREMP), and a part of the Georgia Basin Marine Vessel Air Quality Work Group, which has been established to help to find ways to further reduce marine emissions.

The Port Authority's stewardship of the Fraser River is both complemented and governed by federal, provincial, and local legislation.

Environmental Policy

  1. The Port Authority acknowledges the importance of preserving, protecting, and improving the quality of the environment. The Port Authority believes construction, maintenance, operation of Port facilities, and all land owned or administered by the Port Authority should be consistent with the principles of sustainability and environmental protection.
  2. The Port Authority is committed to conducting its corporate affairs in a proactive, environmentally sensitive and responsible manner to safeguard the environment and the health and safety of its tenants, the public and its employees.
  3. The Port Authority will comply with all applicable environmental laws, implement measures, and manage all operations within its jurisdiction to minimize potential hazards that may affect the environment, tenants, and employees

Policy Implementation Strategies

To accomplish its policy position, the Port Authority has committed to:

  1. Take a strong proactive position toward resolutions should generic, even global, environmental issues threaten the integrity of the Port Authority's operations;
  2. Integrate environmental considerations into business planning, facilities, operating practices, and training programs;
  3. Work in cooperation with all agencies, developing and implementing environmental legislation and regulations in order to set priorities and ensure their effectiveness;
  4. Share information with stakeholders on the environmental aspects of operations and undertakings;
  5. Ensure environmental impacts and hazards associated with the Port's operations are identified and responsibly managed through regularly scheduled reviews of facilities, operating practices and procedures;
  6. Seek cost effective ways of reducing the use of raw materials, toxic substances, energy, water and other resources, and of reducing the generation of waste and noise associated with its day to day operations;
  7. Undertake environmental audits of compliance with Federal, Provincial and Municipal regulations, Port Authority operating regulations, Canada Marine Act and Letters Patent requirements, codes of practice, corporate policy, etc.; and
  8. Identify and promote inventive ways of achieving economic advantages through improved environmental practices.
